In most homes here in Victoria BC, an air source heat pump (ASHP) may be the single biggest thing you can do to the house to reduce operating costs, and improve comfort.
The energy savings are very significant -- generally ranging between a 40% to 60% reduction in heating costs, depending on the size and age of the house, present equipment, etc, etc.
What makes a heat pump different from ANY other form of heating?
Basically, with every OTHER way of heating your home, you:
1) Buy a fuel (gas, oil, wood, or electricity), and
2) Convert the fuel to heat, and
3) Repeat, over and over.
What the ASHP does that is different, is extract heat from the outdoor air. You pay nothing for this heat, it is absolutely FREE! Of course you pay for some electricity to run the pump, but you are not converting that electricity to heat, like you do with an electric heater (baseboard, in-floor, portable, radiant ceiling, electric forced air furnace, or hydronic system).
If you compare an ASHP to any electric heater, it is MUCH more efficient. Virtually all forms of electric heat are 100% efficient -- in other words, if you put 100 units of electricity into an electric baseboard heater, 100 units of heat will come out...not the cheapest form of heat, but 100% efficient nonetheless. Depending on the outdoor air temperature, an ASHP will run in the neighbourhood of 200 -- 300% efficiency -- put that same 100 units of electricity in, and you will get 200 to 300 units of heat out. The reason an ASHP can run at such high efficiency is because it is tapping into an energy source you don't have to pay for -- ambient heat in the outdoor air.
How is that possible? How does it work? In simple terms, a heat pump operates using the same principle as your refrigerator -- a compressor circulates a special refrigerant gas through a closed loop system, which (when it is running) has a hot side, and a cold side. In heating season, the hot side is inside your house, and the cold side is outside.
Using a fan, outdoor air is blown across the cold side, warming it up by 20 or 30 degrees, which causes that heat to get transferred inside the house.
In summer months, the whole system runs in reverse, proving cooling (air conditioning) just as efficiently as it provides heat in the winter.
The net result here in Victoria BC, is a heat pump will provide you with about 90% of your annual heating needs -- in other words, 100% of your heating needs, except for the 10% coldest days (ie below about --5C), where some form of backup may be needed to help it out (most often an electric or gas furnace that is integrated right into the heat pump, and only kicks in if/when the heat pump cannot quite keep up).
What if your home does not have ductwork (electric baseboard heat)?
NO PROBLEM!!
There is a type of heat pump called a "Mini Split Ductless Heat Pump" designed specially for buildings with no ductwork in place.
Inside your home, a few wall or ceiling mounted heads will be installed, each with a fan and coil inside it. Each head can blow hot or cold, and each has its own thermostat. Each indoor head is connected to the outdoor unit with refrigerant lines, which are thin copper pipes. Usually these lines run along the outside of the house, and are disguised with a trim product that looks a lot like downspouts, so they blend in easily to the outside of the house.
With a 'Mini Split Ductless' heat pump system, you get all the benefits of heat pump technology in your house, WITHOUT the huge expense and disruption of retrofitting ductwork!
The final thing to understand about installing any ASHP in your home, is that it will improve comfort year round. The heat (or cooling) will be much more evenly distributed than any older heating system can manage, and the highly efficient and quiet fan mechanisms also provide constant filtering and gentle air movement -- reducing dust and allergens, and evening out temperature and humidity throughout the house. This results in a significant improvement in indoor air quality and comfort.
